It is disappointing and disheartening to hear attorneys tell stories of the unnecessary stress caused by being left adrift, without guidance from their supervisors. Mental Health Awareness Month seems like an appropriate time to reiterate the importance and value of attorney mentoring. We often hear about attorney burnout. I am fortunate in that, after 47 years of practicing law, I have not experienced burnout. I credit my good fortune to a large degree to my two mentors: my former partner Charles E. Hamilton, III and former New Orleans City Attorney Salvador Anzelmo. When I had a question or concern, no matter how small, they never looked annoyed or made me feel stupid, and actually seemed happy to answer my questions no matter how busy they were. And they always had my back. Those early days are long gone, but the impact remains. And now at Rubin Fortunato, we strive to do for each other what Charlie and Mr. A did for me.
