As Autism Awareness Month (April) comes to an end, we wanted to take a moment to highlight a local gem, The Timothy School. The Timothy School is the oldest non-profit approved private school in Pennsylvania devoted exclusively to teaching students with autism. For more than 50 years, The Timothy School has worked to develop an understanding of autism. Drawing from over 25 school districts, The Timothy School educates children and young adults, ages five to 22, with programming designed to recognize the strengths and uniqueness of their students. And, it’s right here in Berwyn, Chester County!
Visiting The Timothy School is one of the best ways to see the magic in action, and we were lucky enough to recently take a tour with Sarah Hale, the school’s Director of Development. On the tour, we witnessed, first-hand, faculty and staff teaching students life skills like budgeting; making a shopping list (in preparation to go shopping for the items); and working in the school store. We also saw the resources available to students to learn how to do laundry; clean a bedroom; and practice self-care, like brushing their hair or teeth. Every faculty and staff member that we met along the way was smiling and was so proud to tell us about their students.
In addition to teaching life skills, the school also offers speech therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, reading support, and physical education.
And the studio of The Timothy Crafters is a sight to see. The Timothy Crafters Program is an on-campus internship program that offers middle and secondary school students the opportunity to learn and practice fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, dexterity, problem-solving, flexibility, focus, and creativity through the creation of crafts in a relaxed, social setting. Items are then sold to support the Timothy Fund, which helps the school bridge the gap between the funding it receives from school districts and the crucial resources it needs to provide curriculum and program enhancements, special activities, and facility improvements. We purchased some Spring wreaths for our Rubin Fortunato colleagues and will be wearing some neat lapel pins, comprised of the school’s logo or other fun images, that the school graciously provided to us.
Rubin Fortunato celebrates The Timothy School and its vision to empower students with autism to achieve their greatest potential in all aspects of their lives. We were proud to show our support through a financial donation. To express our gratitude to the faculty and staff, we enjoyed hosting an in-service day breakfast for them from our favorite caterer, Crocodile Catering, in Wayne.
You can support The Timothy School in a variety of ways, including at its 30th Annual Golf Classic on May 13, 2024.
