November 1, 2016
Throughout October 2016, Rubin Fortunato collected nearly 600 books from its employees to support City Year’s book fair at Anacostia High School.
City Year is an education-based nonprofit organization partnered with Americorps that works toward closing the opportunity gap for students by serving in 18 D.C. Public Schools to improve attendance, behavior, and course performance through academic interventions, mentoring, and after-school programs.
The City Year team at Anacostia High School hosted a school-wide book fair in November 2016 to promote literacy and at-home reading. Their goal was to acquire new or gently-used books from donors so that every student at Anacostia could own two or more books to read at home.
Rubin Fortunato donated books of a variety of genres and difficulty levels to catch the interest of ninth to twelfth graders, including romance novels, sci-fi books, historical fiction, classic literature, young adult fiction, biographies, and more.
