February 1 is National Change Your Password Day, an opportunity to consider cybersecurity overall both at home and at work and to make changes to keep your online identity as safe as possible.

As an IT Director, I see firsthand how often security incidents begin with a single weak, reused, or shared password.  Technology evolves quickly, but basic cyber hygiene still matters.  Most breaches don’t start with sophisticated hacks; they start with individual compromised credentials.

While security often takes an extra step and may not be what we consider “practical” on a day-to-day basis, taking steps to keep information secure is critical to protect ourselves and our workplaces from bad actors.  A strong password is crucial to this protection.

Here are some easy tips to keep yourself and your credentials safe:

  • Use unique passwords for work and personal accounts.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible.
  • Consider using a password manager app instead of sticky notes or a spreadsheet to store passwords.
  • When in doubt, change your password, especially after suspicious activity.

Remember, security isn’t just the IT Department’s responsibility; it’s a team sport that requires all of us to participate.

National Change Your Password Day is a great day to clean up your passwords and encourage better security habits across your teams.
