During Women’s History Month, Rubin Fortunato celebrates contemporary women leaders who are making a positive difference in our world.  Today, Rubin Fortunato highlights pediatric dentist, Dr. Robyn Ivker, founder and owner of Super Tooth Pediatric Dentistry with locations in East Norriton and Northeast Philadelphia.

Dr. Ivker always knew that she wanted to help people and give back to the community, and when she interned for a dentist in college, she found her calling: pediatric dentistry.  As a pediatric dentist, Dr. Ivker has the opportunity to educate children at a young age about the important role dental hygiene plays – not only in their overall health, but also in their ability to succeed.  Studies show that poor dental hygiene and dental pain can inhibit learning, contribute to poor grades and low GPAs, and result in low self-esteem.  By teaching kids how to take care of their teeth, Dr. Ivker knows she is having a positive impact on their future health and educational success.  Plus, kids are fun to work with.

All children deserve excellent, compassionate care, regardless of insurance or access to care.  However, many pediatric dental practices accept few insurance plans or operate on a purely cash basis.  Dr. Ivker strives to reach kids in underserved communities.  She accepts all insurance plans, including CHIP and Medicaid, and employs Spanish-speaking staff.  Dr. Ivker also knows that, for some families, there are many obstacles that parents and caregivers have to overcome just to get a child to the dentist.  By providing as much care as she can in one appointment, Dr. Ivker reduces the number of necessary follow-up visits, lessening the burden on the family.

Working with young patients requires special skills, and Dr. Ivker has it in spades.  In addition to state-of-the-art technology and equipment – all geared towards young people, Dr. Ivker and her skilled team offer a fun and engaging atmosphere with a Lego wall, books, games, noise-muting headphones, and blankets.  She does her best to ensure that her young patients are comfortable during their treatments and learn not to fear dental visits.

But, it’s more than fun and games.  Dr. Ivker is committed to empowering children and their parents with oral health knowledge.  Dr. Ivker and her Super Tooth staff also perform significant community outreach in the Norristown Area School District and provide early dental screenings in local daycares and head start programs.  This outreach provides parents with the resources to seek dental care for their children in their own community.  Dr. Ivker also takes her education-based message of good dental hygiene “on the road” to various community events, including the Whitpain Community Festival, Brad Fox Fishing Derby, Lulu Shriners Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, and Teddy Bear Clinic at the Elmwood Park Zoo.  Super Tooth also donates $50 to the Eagles Autism Foundation for every 50 patients who visit the office.

We commend Dr. Ivker for her dedication to ensuring that all children – regardless of their family’s resources – get the dental care that they need to “nurture a lifetime of strong, natural smiles for the next generation.”
