Maine amended its labor law, effective August 9, 2024, to enable the Maine Department of Labor to assess a fine not to exceed $1,000 or the amount provided in the violated law or rule, whichever is less, as a penalty for the violation.  The amendments further enable the Maine Department of Labor to order employers to pay back wages, liquidated damages in the amount of two times the back wages, and a reasonable rate of interest to workers affected by labor law violations.  See 2023 Me. SP 179.

Employers: Labor law violations are serious. If you have questions regarding minimum wage, overtime, wage payments, vacation and sick leave, child labor, meal and rest breaks, or other wage-and-hour topics, seek counsel before you face scrutiny or litigation from the Department of Labor or your workforce.
