Juneteenth (observed annually on June 19th and a national holiday since 2021) is also known as Freedom Day and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned of the end of the Civil War and their freedom from bondage, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Rubin Fortunato applauds the many contributions Black Americans have made to society throughout our nation’s history. We continue to recognize the ongoing struggle for equality for all people and know that it is up to each one of us to continue working toward a just and equitable society.
